What Causes Fatigue, Body Pains And Nausea After Nortriptyline Withdrawal?

default
Posted on Mon, 23 Jun 2014
Question: Hi, My mother who is 72 started to take Nortriptyline (10 mg tablet - 1/day) and Haloperidol (0.5 mg - 1/day) about 15 years ago to combat menopause-related symptoms, mainly anxiety. About 4 months ago she decided that she no longer needed the pills so with her doctor's supervision, the dosage was gradually reduced over 2 months and then stopped. However, she seems to suffer from withdrawal symptoms (fatigue, body ache, nausea, lack of appetite.) I would like to know if this is normal and if her symptoms will gradually disappear. How long can this take? Thank you in advance for your response.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.

I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.

It could be withdrawal symptoms of nortriptyline. With 15 years of usage of nortriptyline, these symptoms can come up. However they should settle down in 2-4 weeks. If they dont then there is a possibility that these symptoms could be due to depression which was not treated completely with nortriptyline. If so then the medicine will have to be restarted and at this time on a slightly higher dosage. Haloperidol is not related to these symptoms and should better be left discontinued.

Hope I am able to answer your concerns.

If you have any further query, I would be glad to help you.
