What Causes Fatigue After A Flu Shot?

default
Posted on Mon, 5 Jan 2015
Question: Got a flu shot 8 weeks ago.
Was totally fatigued the next day, like when you get the flu. No other symptoms. Have been totally fatigued ever since. Sleep 10 hours a night and wake up tired. Fatigued all day.

Only medication is Losartan 50 mg daily.
Blood tests show no issues or infections.

Thanks!

Brief Answer:
Further tests necessary

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
Im Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. As the blood tests are normal, I assume you have no anemia.
2. Need evaluation for hypothyroidism.
3. Even after regular sleep, if you are getting tired, it's possible you might have restless leg syndrome or sleep apnea. Disturbed sleep can cause extreme fatigue.
4. Hope your nutrition is good with high protein, moderate carbohydrates and fat.

You need to get your thyroid hormone levels and sleep study done. Also protein levels and ESR require estimation to rule out associated malnutrition or inflammation respectively.

Additionally, take plenty of water.
Hope your bladder and bowel movements are normal.
Continue medication, as it is essential.
Do get back with test results. As there is no specific query, few tests are necessary to understand, if there is any pathology.

Hope it helps.
Any specific queries, happy to help again.

Thanks, Dr Prakash!

No anemia and thyroid function was normal, too.

I eat healthy.

I do have sleep issues.

Also have headaches, lower back pain, and anxiety that seems new with this.

Is it possible also that my blood pressure medication may need adjusting since my surgery? (Was told this by a nurse)

Thanks again!

Brief Answer:
Check blood pressure and do mild exercises.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for asking again.

Good to know, there is no anemia and thyroid is working well.

1. Blood pressure medication, if required needs adjustment. However, symptoms appear to be more related to hypotension (if present), except headache (can be seen in hypertension usually). Get your blood pressure evaluated. I doubt, it could be abnormal, but get it tested once. Based on 3 or 4 checks of blood pressure, if necessary medication can be modified.

2. Lower back pain could be due to back muscle weakness and abnormal posture. Will need physiotherapy along with back exercises. Muscle strengthening exercises for back is necessary.

3. Sleep is very important. Due to anxiety or pain, reason needs evaluation. Try to have a regular sleep pattern (night 8-9 hours). Avoid sleep during day time, maybe half an hour in afternoon. Eat lightly atleast two hours before sleep. Avoid coffee/tea/alcohol after 5 pm. Warm bath before sleep.
If necessary, sleep study can be done. For anxiety, benzodiazepines maybe necessary.

Get blood pressure checked. Based on blood pressure, further evaluation can be done.

Look into nutrition aspect. Very important, you get a protein rich diet. Along with it, moderate exercises (walking for 30-45 min early morning) and involvement in social activities is essential.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
