What Causes Facial Pain While Coughing?
Question: Hi, my dad has been experiencing headaches for the last 9 months. They just come on randomly. He is 58 years old and is otherwise healthy with no previous operations or sicknesses. The headaches have not gone away since 9 months ago becoming a constant every day pain except every time he coughs he gets a stabbing pain from his upper jaw to his temples. Both sides of his face. The electric shock pain is that bad he had to hold his head and stop what he is doing. The pain had been that severe that he has been unable to work at times or been sent home from work. Any help would be much appreciated as doctors he has seen have no answers. Thankyou.

There may be two possibilities.
First possibility may be trigeminal neuralgia involving facial area with current like lancinating pain for seconds and aggravating on chewing, washing face. The treatment is carbamazepine or pregabalin, gabapentin or amitryptiline.
The second possibility may be chronic tension type headache if symptoms of pain are involving more in head area with decreased sleep, anxiety and stress. For this amitryptiline, nortryptiline or sertraline may be helpful.
Visit a neurologist and discuss these possibilities. I am sure the doctor will know about it and about the medications I mentioned.
