Brief Answer:
Peripheral vascular disease needs to be ruled out

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I have gone carefully through your query and understand your concerns. Regarding the pain in your fingertips I would need to ask you if you are a smoker and whether your hands are warm. If you are a smoker, the smoking habit could be contributory and you should quit smoking. It is important to keep the hands warm. If that still does not help, I would insist you to upload an image of your hands including the finger tips. Based on it I would guide you further. It needs to be evaluated whether you could have vascular problems.

Regarding the back pain I would need to ask you whether it has been long lasting or is it caused by some trauma. Possibly it has a component of muscle spasm. The vicious cycle of pain and spasm needs to be broken and I would insist you to take paracetamol or acetaminophen 500 mg two tablets together twice or thrice daily for next 3 days. This should ease the problem and make it go away. If it does not, I would insist you to get a X Ray of Lumbosacral spine (AP and lateral) done and to see a physical therapist with the reports. Based on the findings he would be able to demonstrate to you proper exercises that should provide relief.

Let me know if I could help further.

Thank you Dr. Saha.

I am a former smoker and have been quit for 5.5 years. I also had numbness and tingling in my left cheek, my lips and the top of my head. It was very strange.

The symptoms all came on very quickly that morning. It started with the lower back pain. There was no trauma; however I've had kidney stones one time (1984 when I was 6 months pregnant) and have had sciatica issues.

Thank you for your detailed response. The symptoms have all vanished with the exception of a few muscle spasms.

I will be following up with my PCP.

Regards,

Brief Answer:
Thanks for the update

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. It is good to know that the symptoms have vanished. Peripheral neuropathy can be involved and in that case taking methylcobalamine (Vitamin B12) supplement 1500 mcg once daily should help.

In case the symptoms recur, it would be a good idea to get yourself evaluated by your PCP to rule out peripheral vascular disease.
