What Causes Excessive Sneezing And Itchy Face?

default
Posted on Tue, 10 Jan 2017
Question: I was seen in the immediate care today. Doctor said I had upper respiratory virus. I told her the medicine I take every day which is lexapro 10 mg and xanax .5 at 11pm every night. She told me to take clariton, muxinex DM, and flonase at 230 pm. The clariton wasn't helping with the excessive sneezing and itcy face. Was told I could take one benadryl and Advil for all the body aches plus my nightly meds. Thought I should check med reaction site. Looks like none of these meds should be together. Just wanna make sure I'm not going to overdose in my sleep and cause harm to myself.

Hello XXXXXXX

I don't think your are at much risk from this combination one time, but you may want to change the Mucinex DM to just plain Mucinex (guaifenesin). The reason for that is that the DM, which stands for dextromethorphan, a cough suppressant, has a risk of compounding the serotonin effects of the Lexapro. This is very rare, but is still a risk.

The next thing is you might want to switch from Advil to Tylenol for the body aches. For some people, the combination of ibuprofen with Lexapro can increase the risk of stomach irritation.

Taking Benadryl plus Claritin isn't an issue. When people have dermatological problems, allergists sometimes recommend several times the typical dose of, or combinations of, antihistamines compared with what is normally taken for nasal allergies.

The rest should be ok. You may be a little more sedated from taking the Benadryl plus Xanax, but it shouldn't be dangerous.

The Flonase is fine - won't interact with your meds.

So I wouldn't worry about what you have taken today. You may just be a little sleepier than normal, but not necessarily.

For perspective, do know that people take all of these meds together and are fine.

Please let me know if I can provide further information to help.
