What Causes Excessive Sleep During Day Time?

default
Posted on Wed, 12 Aug 2015
Question: Sleep anomaly. Fall asleep at 10-11:30. Wake up 7-8 am. Feel sleepy most days, late morning to mid-afternoon. Will fall asleep while watching tv or reading. If attempting to nap in bed, have trouble falling asleep, but when successful, will sleep for 1-3 hrs. Also, if I go to bed earlier (8-9 pm), I'll usually wake at 3-4 am, and cannot fall asleep until 6-7 am.

Brief Answer:
Since when is this happening ?

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for writing to us with detail clear history.

At age of 70 man needs 5-7 hours sleep per day.You are getting enough sleep.Your problem is excess sleep in daytime.Since when it is happening is very important.

If it is there since more than a year with similar past history we need to check for narcolepsy.
If it is recent onset you need neurological examination and investigations to check for neurological disease.

Your difficulty in falling asleep is likely due to excess sleep overall at night.

Do exercise regularly if possible.

- Since when are you suffering from such problem?

- And is there any past history of such problem?

- Do you have any psychological problem/stress?

I will be happy to help further after your response.

Regards,
Dr.Chintan Solanki.
