Posted on Tue, 23 Jun 2015
Question: Hi my son just turned 5.. He had terrible drooling as a baby... On and off through the years he's had xtra saliva that I have to tell him to swallow. Lately it seems to have increased some. Not enough to wet any clothing but I notice it most when he's excited running around or excited trying to talk. Didn't know if there are any exercises to try to get him to do or if I should make a dr appt.

Brief Answer:
If his cognitive development is normal, drooling isn't a big medical issue

Detailed Answer:
I warmly Welcome you!

Thanks for consulting me at virtual clinic. I have carefully worked through your case, and I can realize your kids health worries. Being your physician, I assure you not to worry as I will take care all of your medical concerns.

Some babies drool more than others. If your kids' other developmental milestones especially cognitive development is normal is his motor skills and reflexes are normal like other kids, then it's not a medical emergency.

But you may talk to the doctor on the next scheduled visit in routine. No special need to worry about. Pediatrician will look for the teeth of the baby too, if they are normal its ok otherwise he may refer to the pediatric dentist.

If baby's development otherwise isn't normal looking, he may need a consultation and treatment for excessive drooling. It includes, but not limited to, oral motor skills training, behavioral therapy, medications in some cases and surgery rarely needed.

Hope it helped you today. In future, if you need further, detailed and quick assistance related to any health issues, feel free to 'ask me a question' directly from my profile.
