What Causes Excessive Coughing After Swimming?

default
Posted on Wed, 18 Jun 2014
Question: My 4 year old daughter has allergies and asthma. She has been coughing a lot since swimming 2 days ago. I took her to doctor this morning. Her oxygen level was 98 with no fever. He gave her antibiotics. He listened to her breathing but did not do X-ray because he said her longs sounded ok. Tonight after playing she is a little wheezy so we are doing nebulizer now. Do you think she was just irritated by chlorine or is secondary drowning a concern more than 48 hours later?

Brief Answer:
Asthma. Use controller drugs

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I went through the query and understood your concern.

Since she has allergies and asthma, the recent episode after swimming may be due to exercise induced asthma. For asthma always there must be a trigger to start the episode of wheeze, breathlessness and other features.

For acute condition to relieve the symptoms albuterol and nebulisation with steroid and other bronchodilator will be helpful(Relievers). But to prevent these episodes you can try montelukast of 4 mg (since <5 year old) once daily with or without inhalational steroids(Controllers). These will help to prevent the episode.

Also before any sports ask hes to take a puff of albuterol inhaler(use spacer for better result) as this will prevent her symptoms and hence she can play as other kids.

I hope this information helps you. Feel free to ask if any further questions.
WIsh you and your family good health.

Regards
