What Causes Esophageal Spasms When Suffering From Lyme Disease?

default
Posted on Mon, 19 May 2014
Question: My daughter, now 43, has 2X been diagnosed with Lyme disease and she has been advised that, as a result, she suffers from, amongst other things, esophageal spasms. Yesterday my daughter was out when she had a frightening incident of an esophageal spasm which put her in fear that she was dying. While there were people around, no one knew what they could do to help her as she gasped for air.

Is there a facility or medical group which has unique expertise in the field?

Brief Answer:
there are patient support groups

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing to HCM.

I am sorry, but I am not aware of any special medical group that has expertise on Lyme disease. The infectious disease specialists deal with this condition. For esophageal spasm, the symptoms are of something twisting inside the chest. Though it may seem like gasping, but she may not really be gasping for air due to esophageal spasm. Nothing much is available for treating esophageal spasm but some medicines can be given by gastroenterologist. With treatment it should improve.

But if you Google "lyme disease support group", then you will get quite a number of support groups where many patients share their experience and even doctors answer to their queries and guide them. There you will get to know a great deal of information and insight on the topic which will sure help you to take better care of your daughter.

Hope I have been helpful.

Regards
