Question: I had a severe bowel obstruction 8-10 years ago leading to surgery of my lower abdomen that found nothing but it resolved itself. Since then I have a problem with maintaining and erection and a numbness in my lower left abdomen. Could something have happened during surgery that may be part of the problem?

Brief Answer:
I don't think that the problem is from the surgery...

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for asking Healthcaremagic.

I am Dr.Endri Katro and I will answering at your questions.

You mentioned that you had a surgery for a bowel obstruction and a inferior incision was done. The nerves responsible for the erectile process are retroperitoneal near the spine and than goes to pelvic region still retroperitoneal.(peritoneum is a layer that divides the organs from the wall muscles)
In your case the surgery was performed inside the peritoneum. So I don't think that during your surgery nerves were damaged. The only way for these kind of nerves to be damaged is if you had a resection of your rectum or your prostate. (I assume that you did not have a rectum resection)

For this reason I don't think that the surgery has anything to do with the problem of maintaining an erection.

About the numbness of your lower left numbness it is normal because in every incision,in our skin, sensor nerves are cut. Every patient that has gone through surgery has an area of numbnes in their body. usually it is 10 cm from the scar.

Wish you good health.
