What Causes Episodes Of Nausea And Bowel Incontinence?

default
Posted on Thu, 3 Nov 2016
Question: I am 52 y/o female. Over the past year, I have had some episodes of sudden loss of bowel control. I have had severe nausea where i was vomiting at work several times a day about 3 times per day. I had a gall bladder ultrasound which was normal.
I had a 2 level cervical fusion on May 10. The spinal surgeon said the nausea/vomiting could be pain or medication related.
My concern is that for the past three weeks I have had very loose diarrhea, very water stools, every time I have gone to the bathroom. I have not mentioned this to my PCP - I have a new PCP i just saw on 9/2/16. This started got worse after that appointment. I stopped drinking/eating dairy products thinking it may be lactose.

Brief Answer:
intestinal infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
1) Do you have abdominal cramp pain with diarrhea, occasional blood/mucus with diarrhea?
2) Loose stool with urgency has many differential diagnosis but common causes are non-specific intestinal infection, specific bacterial infection, irritable bowel syndrome, inflammatory bowel disease, intolerance.
3) Intolerance would be for specific food and symptoms of urgency and loose stool occur after ingestion of specific food
4) Infections occur after eating unhyginic/raw/unprocessed food/water
5) Irritable bowel disease and inflammatory bowel diseases are genetic conditions which require specific aggravating factor to develop these diseases in specific group of population
6) Increased frequency, urgency, absence of mucus/blood in stool, no intolerance to particular food - all these favor the possibility of intestinal infection
7) For this, you should proceed with stool examination (routine and culture tests), if it shows presence of infection then appropriate antibiotics must be started along with hydration therapy.
8) If stool test comes negative then along with hydration therapy and anti-diarrheal medication, you should plan to proceed for colonoscopy.
