Question: Dear Doc,
I have a query regarding my daughter,
1. Does a distemper/Oil paint of the brand name (Asian Paints, India), used in house renovation, increase the Ab Eosinophil count in a 4 year old girl?
2. Is the count of 125 Cells/cmm within the normal range?
3. what are the preventive measures to keep the count in check?
4. Banocide 100 mg and Allercet M kid were given over 6 weeks duration to bring the Eosinophil count from 525 Cells/cmm to 125 Cells/cmm. she was experiencing cough and cold before the medication started. the cough and cold subsided during the medication period.
5. The local doctor has asked me to stop the medicines as the count is normal. what next?
6. how to determine what is my child allergic to?

Brief Answer:
Some children are more prone to allergy than others.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

1. Paints can form aerosols and enter the respiratory tract and cause allergic reactions which are mediated by eosinophils. Hence, distemper or oil paints can indeed increase eosinophil count.

2. Eosinophil blood count (absolute) can range between 30-350. What matters is the relative percentage with respect to the total leucocyte count. So, although it seems to apparently be in the normal range, the relative percentage is required to answer your question.

3. Eosinophils are mediators of allergic reaction. So, antiallergic preparations like Montair LC Kid (monteleukast + levocetirizine) or Allercet M (montekeukast + cetirizine) can be given to keep the count in check.

4. Banocide is an antifilarial agent given on presumption that filariasis could be the cause of raised eosinophil count. Cannot really comment if the reduction of cough was following the natural course of the ailment or was it due to the medicine.

5. Give Allercet M on and off as required. Cold temperatures decrease immunity and precipitate problems. Hence cold needs to be avoided. Otherwise nothing specific needs to be done.

6. Patch test can be done to determine the items she is allergic to. However, there are a large number of items around us which are not tested and hence the test is of limited value.

Brief Answer:
Allergy occurs when body assumes a harmless item to be harmful.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back. Yes, if the child has dust allergy, dust can cause the eosinophil count to rise. The item to which one is allergic to, varies from child to child.

There is no medicine which can directly boost the immunity of your child. All that needs to be done is to give her a wholesome diet and back it up with proper exercise. Taking green leafy vegetables as well as colourful fruits and vegetables are very important in this regard.
