Posted on Wed, 24 Aug 2016
Question: Hi... I had a total thyroidectomy on the 5th of this month, i. e. 23 days ago. Today, I took my first eltroxin 50 mcg. I lost my temper and had a very bad emotional outburst. Could it be the eltroxin? Will I put on weight and lose hair now that I have started this medicine?

Brief Answer:
Possibly related to eltroxin...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Yes, increased temper, anxiety and emotional outburst are known to occur with thyroid hormone replacement. These symptoms typically occur if the dose is over and above required amount. I will recommend you visit your doctor. He/she should cut eltroxin doses after checking TSH value.

Ideally you shouldn't gain or lose weight if the right doses of eltroxin is supplied. Similarly you shouldn't have hair loss issues when the dose is adequate.

Follow up with your treating doctor / endocrinologist.

Hope this answers your question. Let me know if you need clarification.
