default
Posted on Mon, 22 Sep 2014
Question: Hello I am a 56 year old female and I have been experiencing bizzare symptoms at night for the past week. I am waking out of sound sleep after apporox 2 to 3 hrs with elevated blood pressure, my pulse is only slightly elevated. tremors, pressure in my head and burning pain going from the back of neck into my shoulders and down the tops of my arms into my hands, upset stomach but also hunger pains And general feeling of being hit by a truck. It has progressed every night to the point where It is happening every couple of hours. During the day my BP is fine but I am exhausted but experience waves of feeling ok and feeling anxious and depressed about it. I am terrified to go to sleep and feel as though my brain does not want my body to sleep. I have recently had a sleep test that showed mild apnea and am in the process of getting a dental sleep device. It just doesn't seem like the mild sleep apnea could be giving me these symptoms

Brief Answer:
Cardiac status needs to be evaluated

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for choosing health care magic for posting your query.
I have gone through your question in detail and I can understand what you are going through.

Mild sleep apnoea will not lead to these kinds of symptoms. The fact that it is occurring after 2-3 hours of sleep suggests that it could be a cardiac pathology. I have seems some very similar patients who had a reduced ejection fraction of heart presenting with such symptoms. During night, cause of the reduced pumping capacity of the heart, lungs get filled up with fluids and lead to such panicky waking ups with increased heart rate and blood pressure. Although classically there has to be breathlessness, but there can be absence of breathlessness as well. It is a sign of heart failure.
Nothing to panic at this stage. It would be wise to get an echocardiography done of the heart to identify its ejection fraction.
Ofcourse the other5 possibility could be anxiety disorder which can be treated but at first the cardiac causes be better ruled out.

Hope I am able to answer your concerns.
