What Causes Elevated HCG Levels In Blood During Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Thu, 18 Feb 2016
Question: Dear healthcare magic team,
This query relates to pregnancy.
Today I am 12 weeks 2 days pregnant. Age is 29 years and 2 months.LMP was on oct.20,2015.EDD is july 26,2016.
Doc. Prescribed me dual screen, USG(obst)-scan-NT,NB and same was done on XXXXXXX 12,2016.
Reports have come and rest seems to be fine just my HCG,free beta level is 110 ng/ml which is almost thrice than normal levels.
I was told that this blood report and USG are seen in correlation to each other.in the collective conclusion I was declared low risk pregnancy.
I am having these Medicines since dec. 09,2015 –susten sr 300 OD,folizorb OD
I had only one shot of Inj. HCG 5000 IU on Dec.08,2015 then I was prescribed susten sr 300 from dec.09,2015 because in previous ultrasound I had blood in the subchorionic region but now it is absorbed in the latest USG report.

My queries are:
1-HCG level is so high does it results in down syndrome or any other abnormality to the baby,if yes what is the numeric probability?
2-should I go for another Beta HCG test with in 48-72 hours to reconfirm the HCG levels?
3)do you prescribe me for amino or NACE test, because of high HCG level?
4)Is increased HCG level because of susten 300 sr or one shot of inj. HCG 5000 IU on dec.08.?
I am hiding personal information because of privacy, please don’t publish this.
PFA reports.Kindly advice

Thanx

Brief Answer:
BHCG levels are variable

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,

welcome to healthcare magic.

I am Dr.Srilatha gynaecologist.I have gone through your query.

I understand your concern.

I have seen your reports.

In my opinion no reports go in favour of Down's syndrome or any abnormality but for high BHCG level.

The BHCG level is very much variable in different people and the level might not be same in everyone. So singly it might not help in any diagnosis.

Your age is also not a risk factor for Down syndrome as the risk increases with 35 years or more.
The ultrasound also showed normal findings like presence of nasal bone and nuchal translucency within normal limits.

The trisomy 21 or Down syndrome screening is also negative.

So you need not worry. The HCG level only might not be specific to diagnose the Down syndrome.
The high BHCG level is also seen in molar pregnancy but as the ultrasound is normal it is also ruled out.

The susten or BHCG injection might not cause much increase in levels.

If required the BHCG levels can be repeated after 48 hours to know there rate of increase.Usually it's level doubles in 48 hours.

I suggest you to go for triple test during 15-18 weeks in order to be double sure in ruling out Down syndrome.

Usually it is not required in your scenario as all other parameters are normal but it can be done if there is a suspicion regarding the Down syndrome.

Otherwise there is nothing to worry. And your pregnancy seems to be very normal.

Hope this satisfies your query.

Feel free to discuss further.

Best regards...Dr.Srilatha

Brief Answer:
Healthy nutritional diet and adequate fluids are to be taken

Detailed Answer:
like Hi there, goodday.I have gone through your query.
Here are the answers for your queries:-
1)In my opinion there is no risk of preterm delivery as the cervical length of 3.8 cm is good.
If the cervical length is less or equal to 2.5 cm along with previous history of miscarriage or preterm deliveries then risk of preterm delivery persists.
So you need not worry about it.So no need of any injections to prevent preterm labour.
Usually dehydration predispose to urinary tract infection.Urinary tract infection or any infection might predispose to preterm labour.
Urinary tract infections are quite commonly seen in pregnancy.
So take adequate fluids to prevent urinary tract infection.
2)Actually milk and milk products are advised for calcium. As you are lactose intolerant take calcium supplements daily.
3)The iron and calcium each once a day are sufficient .
If your HB is more than or equal to 11 gm/dl then one orofer XT daily is enough.
Other multivitamins are not required.
Take healthy nutritional diet like vegetables, green leafy vegetables, fruits, meat, egg etc.
Green leafy vegetables, zaggery, dates, liver, figs are rich in iron so they need to be taken along with iron supplement.
Practice antenatal exercise or yoga daily.
Take adequate fluids upto 2-3 litres per day.
Hope this satisfies your query.
Feel free to discuss further.
Best regards...Dr.Srilatha
