What Causes Elevated PSA Levels While Treating Prostatitis?
Question: I had a PSA of 1.5 11/2011. Urosepsis 9/2012 with subsequent episodes of prostatitis requiring antibiotics until a long term antibiotic therapy was started last year. PSA 12/2015 was 4.2 and PSA 2/2016 was 4.5. Is the rise in PSA due to the long battle with prostatitis or more of a cancer warning.

As an Urologist, I can fully understand your concern.
First of all, kindly stop the Bactrim at once.
Antibiotics are always as cyclical chemoprophylaxis, hence changed every 3 months.
I would like to know the latest available reports of the following :
When was last DRE(rectal examination) ,by Urologist done ?
1. Urine routine and culture.
2. blood routine,creatinine, RBS, and LFT, if done.
3. Ultrasound -KUB and TRUS .
After seeing these reports, I can advise you on further management.
A PSA of 4.5, isn't alarming.
Don't lose sleep over it.
It may become normal, after next test.

on 12/2015 creatinine 1.18, RBC 4.75, DRE was normal. Urinalysis of 12/2014 was normal. The symptomatic prostatitis episodes after 9/2012 occurred every 2-3 months and cleared with Bactrim DS BID x 4 weeks with each episode. Single strength Bactrim QD was started this January( after the last symptomatic episode cleared) and was ordered to be taken for one year. Recently the frequency of nocturnal urination has increased from every 3 hours to every 5-6 hours and I now have a sensation of complete emptying.
