What Causes Elevated HbA1c Levels And Weight Gain While Treating Hyperlipidemia And Atherosclerosis?

Posted on Mon, 23 Jan 2017
Question: I have had a triple bypass for familial hyperlipidemia and familial atherosclerosis. There is no diabetes in my family. I have always been on the edge of hypoglycemia. Now I am gaining fat around my middle, which I have never had, my blood glucose is around 120, my A1C is 7.9. I am taking:
Alirocumab, 75 MG 1 ML Every 2 weeks     (because of statin intolerance which damaged my knees badly)
Carvedilol, 6.25 MG 1 tablet      Twice a day
Chlorpheneramine maleate, 4 MG 1 tablet As needed
Clopidogrel, 75 MG 1 tablet     Once a day
Estradiol, 1.0 MG     1 tablet      Once a day     (cut from 2 mg 6 months ago)
Levothyroxine Sodium, 25 mcg 1 tablet Once a day
Loratadine, 1 tablet Twice a day     10 MG
Medroxyprogesterone, 1 tablet Once a day     2.5 MG.
Are any of these drug known to cause weight gain and increase in A1C and blood glucose?

Brief Answer:
Carvedilol

Detailed Answer:
Hi Dear User ! Thank you for posting your question here .I read your question and I understand your concern .
I checked the drugs that you are using and I can say that the main drug that may cause both gain weight, (increase cholesterol level )and increase glucose level(sometimes decreases this could exsplain hypoglicemia in the same time ) is Carvedilol.

Also Medroxyprogesteron, Clopidogrel and levothyroxine may affect the lipid levels (from weight) and may affect glucose levels also .

In your case I would suggest to go to your treating doctor (Please don't do any changes in medication by yourself)for a full evaluation (other blood test )and any changes intreatment.

Your HBA1C level are not in normal range as you know that means that during the last 3month(before the day you did the test) was not good and this indicate diabetes. To confirm that you should repeat the test again (both ) .

You take Levothyroxine (for low thyroid hormone ), a pure control of the thyroid may cause gain weight ( one of the sign of hypothyroidism ).To rule out this cause also you need to check TSH,T3,T4levels.
You take Loratadine and Chlorpherenamine in the same time ( I would suggest only one since thay have the same effect ).
Meanwhile decrease fatty food and sugar in your diet (of you have episode of hypoglicemia take sugar )Do excercises (at least 30 minutes walk )every day .
Hope I have answered your question.
If you have any further clarifications I will be happy to help if not you can close the discussion.
Take Care !
