What Causes Elevated GGT And ALT Serum Levels

Question: Good morning Dr. H. Sanghvi,

Last January after the Christmas festivities, in which a drank and eat like a monster, I decided to do a blood test and found that I had elevated GGT & ALT serum levels high ( 117 & 91 respectively). On the 19 of January I started a rigid diet, I excluded any form of alcohol and soft drinks (I used a drink a whole litre of Coca Cola a day), and started to eat right, like I eat beetroots, carrots, garlic and onions daily. Every morning as I woke up and every night right before I slept I used ta drink a whole mug of warm water with 1 fresh lemon juice and ginger.

On the 31st March I did a second blood test and the GGT & ALT serum levels showed a significant drop from 117 to 78 & from 91 to 57 respectively. But also did my Red CELL Platelets from 176 to 110.

I feel very health and when I cut my face during shaving the Blood stops within seconds. I don't bruise very easily either. What do you think was the reasons of the drop in the platelets ? shall I be concerned ? Shall I continue with my current diet ?

Thanks and regards XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
No need to worry.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, dear XXXXXXX
I have gone through your question.
I can understand your concern.

Your GGT and ALT was high and it was due to your diet and alcohol.
On second blood test GGT and ALT levels are reduced due to diet control and alcohol stoppage. It is very good that you stopped the alcohol. Your liver enzymes level will come down to normal range within 2 months. So don't worry about that.

Now comes to your platelet count.
There are many reasons for low platelet count. Most common cause is some viral infection. Your platelet count is only slightly low. Moreover you don't have any symptoms of bleeding and you are feeling healthy. No any other symptoms. So it is not a cause of big concern.

You should continue your current diet. Avoid alcohol and high fat diet. Take high protein diet. Repeat your platelet count after 2-3 weeks.

In between if you have any sign of bleeding or fever then consult your doctor urgently. Otherwise no need to worry. Just be relaxed. It will come back to the normal within short period of time.

Hope I have answered your questions. If you have any doubts then feel free to ask me. I will be happy to answer you.
