default
Posted on Fri, 1 Apr 2016
Question: My husband had blood work done and got his results today. Everything was is normal range except for his AST (SGOT) test which was 161 and his ALT (SGPT) test which was 66. He is not a drinker and has not had any injuries to his liver. He is 30 years old and in relatively good health (he has asthma). He is not exhibiting any specific symptoms and claims he feels completely normal. What could be going on?

Brief Answer:
I suggest he sees a hematologist/gastroenterologist.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about this abnormal liver enzymes results. It is difficult to tell what the exact cause is without some further tests. The most common cause is often alcohol and with him nothing a drinker, this is ruled out. Other possible causes include infections, medications, etc. I will suggest that a complete liver function evaluation be done by a hematologist to map out what the exact problem is. Depending on the initial findings, further evaluation and management would be tailored accordingly.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be. Above all, thanks for using our services.
