What Causes Edema, Swelling In Feet And Ankles?

default
Posted on Fri, 5 Jun 2015
Question: I was in the hospital recently and since I have returned home I have a swelling of both feet and ankles. On my left foot I have a spot where there is pain like I have broken bones on the top of the foot. I have not had any type of injury to my foot. I was hospitalized for an allergic reaction to a medication called Lisinpril that I had taken for my years. I was changed to the generic and had a bad reaction for which I was given steroids at the hospital. I am also a Type 2 Diabetic and I was wondering if this is neuropathy .

Brief Answer:
Long sitting and standing

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing back,

I have read your answers in detail.
There are 3 causes of edema in both feet usually.

1) Prolonged period in bed, prolonged standing or sitting.

2) Heart failure,

3) Kidney failure.

In you case as you said you haven't been having Kidney or heart issues so most probable culprit of your problems seems to be prolonged periods in bed or prolonged sitting. pressure due to gravity gets raised in legs and fluid oozes out of veins to gather in the leg.

This is kind of a good news, should i say, you just have to follow some simple tips.

Stay XXXXXXX keep walking at home , you don't need to walk too much just going to kitchen after an hour or going to visit your pets after an hour will do.

Wrap crepe bandage around the swollen area this will help the edema settle down quick.

IMPORTANT: Keep your feet elevated, do not hang them while sitting. Don't stand for long periods like half hour or more, without walking around or sitting in between.

This thing should settle down soon.

Keep checking your BP.It shouldn't be high.

If edema doesn't settle in a week or so then see your doctor hey may want to get your kidney tests done and echo done.

Check your salt intake and take one egg albumen boiled in morning things will be all fine :)

Wish you a great weekend

....

I Hope this answers your question, if your have more queries feel free to ask, otherwise close the discussion and rate it. Wish you the best of health.
