What Causes Ear Bleeding After Putting Pressure On Left Side Of Head?

default
Posted on Sat, 21 Jun 2014
Question: I was laying on the couch and had a pillow under my head on the left side watching tv. When I lifted my head, I felt my left ear was a little wet. My ear was bleeding. Not bad, but there was blood in the ear canal. I have no pain and I haven't noticed any hearing loss. What could have caused this?

Brief Answer:
Small perforation of ear-drum is a possibility.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.

Since your head was resting on a pillow on the same side , a small positive pressure on the ear-drum (tympanic membrane) could have ruptured it. The eardrum is very thin and easily ruptured even on a small pressure on it. This can be painless and without any hearing loss.

I would request you to see the ENT Surgeon , who would do ENT inspection to know the exact damage that has caused the bleeding and rule out other possibilities such as polyp which too can cause painless bleeding.

Please do not instill anything in the ear. Do not clean yourself. Do not blow nose. If the bleeding is continuous just plug-in the clean cotton ball outside the ear canal ( not inside).

Wish you a good recovery.
