What Causes Dysfunctional Menstrual Bleeding?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Jan 2017
Question: Hi, I have a period question. I started my period on the 16th of December and had a heavy period the first three days then lightened up, it lasted a normal amount of time and then went away. Now 13 days after the start of my last period I am bleeding again. The blood isn't as much as a normal period, but it's more than spotting during ovulation. I also have a cold that has come with a severe cough. Yesterday I coughed hard all day and lots of nose blowing. My question is, can severe coughing and nose blowing during ovulation cause you to bleed in-between periods?

Brief Answer:
Yes it can due to indirect mechanisms

Detailed Answer:
Hi! Welcome to health care magic! Thanks for sharing your concerns with us. We will try to help you in best way possible.

First of all, it is sad to know what you had been experiencing lately. Based on the history you have shared, the likely explanation to your answer is yes, it can though uncommonly but still possibility does exist. Usually coughing increases intra abdominal pressures which can induce more bleeding during menstruation or trigger menstruation from a uterus which is just at the verge of menses to start bleeding due to mechanical pressure or trauma but intermenstrual bleed, much earlier than expected can only be explained by indirect mechanisms which include stress or extreme conditions leading to hormonal imbalance which is considered to be triggering force in initiation of menstrual cycle.

You should Meanwhile avoid exposure to cold and use steam inhalations and cough suppressants for symptomatic relief. Wishing you a speedy recovery from the respiratory symptoms. If cough persists, you may also need anti histamines like cetrizine or loratidine alongwith antibiotics like augmentin or azithromycin.

Hope this has answered your query, if you have any more questions, feel free to ask. Regards.
