What Causes Dizziness And Nausea Along With Nose Bleeding?

default
Posted on Mon, 13 Oct 2014
Question: For the last few days I have been extremely dizzy, nauseous, weak, with the right side of my nose bleeding and having blood clots in it. I already have had neck surgery twice and my neck has been hurting and causing my left arm and hand to go numb or at least I think that is what caused it. I would really like to know what is going on. I hope you can help.

List of possibilities long;need some info from you

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help you. I completely understand how your symptoms can be frustrating and worrying at the same time, but I am here to help and guide you through with either an accurate diagnosis or at least to help you narrow down the list of possible causes.

Let me start by listing some of the most common causes that can cause such a presentation, they are:
-Ear infections
-Nose trauma, tumor, foreign body, nasal polyps, etc.
-Medication related (Eg. use of aspirin, etc.)
-High blood pressure
-Extreme temperatures (heat or cold)
-Dehydration
-Sinusitis
-Migraine
-Diabetes
-Cardiac abnormalities
and a few others.

As you can see ma'am, the list is quite long and difficult to diagnose. So I would like some information from you to be able to better understand the possible cause for your symptoms ma'am. Please write back to me with a response to the following questions ma'am:
-Do you have any itching in your ear? If yes, have you inserted any foreign objects inside your ear or have gone swimming recently or are facing cold weather?
-Are you on any medications? If yes, please list them? Medications to cause thinning of blood?
-Extreme temperatures in your region?
-What is your daily consumption of fluids?
-Have you recently measured your blood pressure and conducted an EKG(ECG)?
-Do you experience vertigo (is a balance disorder in which the patient experiences inappropriate spinning with associated symptoms of nausea and vomiting)
-Do you feel sensitive to light or sound? Does it irritate you?
-Any stress or emotional trauma or anxiety?
-Exposure to toxic gases or chemicals?

I look forward to hearing from you in order to help you further ma'am. We shall work together in finding the possible cause ma'am.

Best wishes.

I am answering the questions you requested. I don't have any itching in my ears. There have not been any extreme temperatures in the area. I have been monitoring my blood pressure and it has been fine. I am on blood pressure medication. I have a large intake of fluids. I haven't had any stress that I know of and I haven't had any emotional trauma. I don't have any sensitivity to light or sound. I am suffering from menopause and am waiting to have my hormones balanced. I'm not really experiencing vertigo just lightheadedness. I do take a number of medications and I asked my doctor that prescribes them to me if they could be causing any of this (I had an appointment with him today), he said no but went over everything with me anyway. He couldn't tell me what was going on. If you need anymore information let me know. I hope this helps you to figure out what is going on because I am sure tired of not being able to get up and do very much.

Please be patient ma'am,

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

Thabk you so much for that information.

I can understand that your case is causing you some anxiety as it is proving to be difficult to diagnose, but as long as you have symptoms there is a condition that will be present requiring a diagnosis and treatment.

Here are a few investigations that might help to be evaluated, if they have not been checked already. They are:
-Complete cardiac profile
-Blood coagulation profile
-ENT consultation
-MRI of the head and neck to look for any compression of the spinal cord or other possible abnormalities
-Correction of hormone levels
-Doppler USG of the neck

Please provide me with the list of medications you are on, for a second opinion (just the make sure these medications are not causing your symptoms).

I hope and pray we can find the cause soon and relieve you of your symptoms. Please write back to me with the list of medications as this could help, and request for all the above suggestions.

Best of luck ma'am.

Brief Answer:
All medications can be related to your side eff's

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am and thank you for that information.

As expected, the medications you are currently using can cause all the symptoms you are experiencing. Let me list the medications and the side effects they carry that match yours, they are:

-Simvastatin: Can cause unexplained muscle and/or joint pain and nausea
-Baclofen: Can cause weakness, dizziness and nausea
-Pristiq: Dizziness, muscle stiffness, and nose bleeds. Although, while on this medication if you experience nose bleeds you should report to a doctor immediately
-Celebrex: Can cause nausea
-Morphine: Can cause dizziness and nausea
-Methimizole: Dizziness, nausea and muscle/joint pain
-L-lysine: No side effects relating to your presentation
-Acidophilus: No side effects relating to your presentation
-Vitamin D supplements: Weakness and nausea
-Goody shots: No side effects relating to your presentation

As you can see ma'am, not just one or two but all your side effects are common side effects of the above listed medications. I wonder how your doctor ruled out your presentation to be possible side effects of these drugs when the side effects are:
-Nausea: Can be caused by simvastatin, baclofen, celebrex, morphine, vitamin D
-Dizziness: Can be caused by baclofen, pristiq, morphine and methimizole
-Weakness: Seen commonly with baclofen and vitamin D
-Nose bleeds: Considered to be a serious side effect of pristiq
-Neck pain: Simvastatin, pristiq and methimizole

I hope this information proves to be valuable to you, and you can take this up with your doctor during the next visit. Please feel free to discuss any issues with me, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

Oh, one other thing I meant to mention. Sometimes like right now it keeps feeling like something is crawling across my hair on top of my head.I'm sorry, one other thing that I really wish you could answer because so far there aren't any Drs. of any type that can. I went from a size four to a size fourteen in less than two years for absolutely no reason. I even saw a nutritionist who told me I ate the healthiest of any client she had ever seen and even though I have hyperthyroidism instead of losing weight I gain. No one can tell me why I do this, but with the problems I have with my neck and back having this extra weight is not good for me. With the exception of right now because of my other symptoms, I don't sit on my but. I'm sorry to bother you with all of this, but I don't know anyone else to ask. Thank you so much.

I don't know what happened to the one message I sent you in answer to the one about my medicine and there side effects, but here it is again. He is just the doctor workmanship comp. sends me to for my injections my medicine. He doesn't really do anything else.

Brief Answer:
Women between 50-59 yrs obese, cause-menopause

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am.

The sensation of something in your hair is normal and is most probably nothing but hightened senses, there is nothing to worry about unless there is something in your hair (eg. Lice), have it looked at by a friend or kin.

As for the weight gain, if your doctors have found no abnormality and you continue to have a healthy diet, taking your age into consideration I would suspect menopause to be the cause. Let me provide at least 3 theories supporting that:

-In menopause, estrogen levels start reducing and reach a low level, and estrogen controls body weight to a large extent.
-Lowered estrogen levels causes the basal metabolic rate to drop making it difficult to lose weight. It also causes the individual to be less physically active and consume more, resulting in weight gain.
-Body starches and blood sugar is not utilised effectively during low estrogen levels causing excessive deposition of body fat

Not to a large extent, but replacement of estrogen (i.e. estrogen therapy can help. I hope that is clear.

As for your doctor, it would have been wise to keep a more experienced and professional doctor as your family doctor. I hope you find my response helpful ma'am, please feel free to write back to me anytime, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.

Just to let you know, I do have a family GP and she like all the rest are stumped. I have had my pancreas checked, my liver, stomach, bowel, and every other thing anyone could think of. I had an endoscopy done because I had started having pains and a swollen area just above my belly button. They discovered the reason for the swelling was because my duodenum was smaller than the size of a dime and so my food couldn't digest correctly, so, they stretched it as much as possible, but they still couldn't get it to the size it should be. In regards to my hormones, I went today and had all the blood work done plus some liver testing. Something I failed to mention is the fact that until this week I have been working out three times a week at a gym, and when I am not there I have a 3000 square. ft. home to take care of and a huge yard. One thing I never do is sit on my butt because I'm afraid if I do that I will get to where I can't hardly move and even though I'm not supposed to be doing so much I do anyway. As for my hair, well it must be heightened senses sense I know it isn't lice. The one thing I can tell you is all of my doctors say the same thing ( they truly can't understand why I can't get rid of this weight and am still gaining ) even after me keeping a food diary for three months. I hope this gives you a little better picture.

Brief Answer:
Still have hope

Detailed Answer:
Hello once again ma'am and thank you for that information.

Wow, a 3000 sq ft. home; and I am really proud of your level of activity and a good diet. But sometimes, some things cannot be explained. I had a patient who ate all he could and was the size of a broom stick. His family described his consumption to equal about 5 members of their family, I suspected malabsorption syndrome. But all his reports returned clear, and all nutritional levels were normal ruling out all such possibilities. He continues to live a healthy life and recently even had a child.

You did not mention the liver and hormone reports, or are they still due? Please do write back to me with them. I understand how your doctors must be baffled, but I still have some hope as I suspect a hormonal cause. Until that is ruled out, I have not joined their club.

Looking forward to hearing some good news.
Best of luck ma'am

No, I do not have the reports back yet. I probably won't get them back until next Wednesday. As for my weight I could understand it if it had happened gradually or if happened as soon as the thing with my hormones started, but I had my first partial hysterectomy when I was 19 and my second one when I was 20. That is why this is so mystifying. Everything that is going on with me has been going on for a long time, not counting the symptoms I have had for the last few days, but all the rest I have basically just always had. Like I told you, I was taking hormones until just recently and that is because I thought they needed to be changed

Brief Answer:
Looking forward to next Wednesday

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am.

It would be noteworthy to know that you mentioned only a hysterectomy and not a hysterectomy plus a bilateral oopherectomy which means your ovaries were left in place to produce the hormones your body required. As these ovaries would have reduced functioning or completely stopped once menopause hit, your symptoms of weight gain could have risen.

I am trying to be positive and hoping we can find some bleak light of hope, with which we can conti ue to work and help relieve you of your symptoms. Looking forward to the reports. Please do not hesitate wo share anything with me, I am here purely to help you.

Best of luck ma'am.
