What Causes Dizziness And Nausea After Having Tums For Acid Reflux?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 Feb 2015
Question: I am 18. At the beginning of December(of 2014), I started to experience bad acid reflux. My doctor put me on Rantidine, which helped, however did not completely solve the issue. I began to take Tums, which I ended up taking WAY too many of, which caused extreme constipation for a week, the last week of December. During this period of constipation I also started to feel dizzy, have an increasing amount of eye-floaters, and have bad headaches. After my third doctors visit in a month, I was told to go both to a Nuerologist and Ophthalmologist. I saw both two weeks ago. The Nuerologist tested all of my responses(in a nuerological test), and said that everything seemed fine, and that the only next step was an MRI. My Nuerologist currently has me on twice-daily 220mg of Aleve and once-daily Mag-Citrate. The Ophthalmologist said that the insides of my eyes looked great. I also saw a G.I. doctor in the same time period who put me on once-daily 30mg Prevacid, which works better for my acid reflux.

My concern now lies in this -- my lymph nodes, particularly on the right side of my neck, are swollen. My hands and feet seem to be somewhat sporadically changing in temperature throughout the day, and at times, sweat profusely. At times, my ears, usually more so the right ear, will turn red and very hot. The skin on the tips of my fingers has begun to peel. And, particularly after working out, my tonsils hurt and appear very large. I don't know what is going on, and frankly, I've almost given up. Please advise what my next move could be.

Also note, I got blood tests and stool tests done last month, which came back all negative.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for asking

I read your question and i understand your concern. Tums / calcium carbonate are notorious for constipation as well as vestibular disturbances leading to dizziness, nausea and vomiting etc. So all your conventional symptoms are attributed to the tums you took and these will go away once you stop talking tums slowly with passage of time.

Your ophthalmological and neurological work up is unremarkable so there is nothing to worry about in that regard. Just be compliant with the medications you are prescribed with and do as directed.

Now the lymph node swelling is a response to the sore throat and inflamed tonsils you mentioned and is perfectly normal physiological response of lymph nodes so no worries. Its least likely to be the concern like lymphoma etc. This peeling skin however needs a dermatological opinion though as it might be psoriasis or just a nutritional neuropathy only examination will clarify. Get an otorhinolaryngological opinion too if the inflammation does not subside. You may take aspirin gargles and garlic watr mouth rinses to help the sooting of the sore throat.

Last but not the least in your acid reflux problems. Just modify diet and lifestyle. Focus on losing weight. avoiding chocolates, spices and processed & caned products, eating more fibers and natural products, eating small frequent meals and not lying immediately after taking the meal plus keeping th ehead side of the bed elevated for at least 8 inches is advised. No caffeine, alcohol or any other beverages and stimulants.

I hope it helps. take good care of yourself and dont forget to close the discussion please.

Khan

I have been off of Tums for a month now. Right now my worst symptoms are absolutely the temperature variations of the hands and feet. Right now, as of this writing, my right foot feels cold and at a loss of blood, my hands are sweating, and my right ear is red and very hot.

I don't know, something just seems up. Perhaps I just wait it out further.

Also; lymph nodes in thigh/crotch area seem swollen but not to the level of those in my neck.

I had been seeing a pediatric doctor -- I am planning on seeing an Internist now that I am 18 and my symptoms are more complex.

Also note that, if anything, I should be gaining weight -- I am 5'7' and 135 pounds.

Thank you for getting back to me!

The symptoms of dizziness may take a couple of weeks after weaning or tums. So no worries these shall resolve on its own. Just take some antivert for the relief and use some support while walking to prevent sudden fall.

This hand and feet feeling cold with ears getting red hot and tips of the nose feeling cold all point towards to raynaud's phenomenon which is an exaggerated sympathetic response to harsh cold weather around as it is winter out there and it happens to some of the people including myself. The best remedy i have come up myself as a treatment is keeping them warm as possible and avoiding cold exposure at any cost. Topical vasodilators like nitroglycerine ointments help a lot. Use petroleum jellies vaselines over these areas to prevent any cracks or crusts of skin.

Now the groin lymph nodes, if you don't have any urinary symptoms or discomfort, then let them self resolve and ignore them as hormonal influence due to adolescence may be the reason behind this apparent nodl swellings in groin. How ever you should get examined though for these swellings as i mentioned earlier to be out of the woods.

The sweating hands should get evaluation of thyroid functions to be on the safer road to rule out any hyperthyroidism.

Its good to know that your weight is maintained. Keep it there and modify other lifestyles, GERD won't be a problem any more than.

Seek an internal medicine expert nearby and see what they come up with.

Take care

Thank you. I was just checking to see if any of this could be tied together. Hopefully the internist figures it out; otherwise, I will just continue to fight the symptoms off.

I will close the discussion.
