What Causes Dizziness And Nausea After A Flight Journey?

default
Posted on Wed, 4 Jun 2014
Question: Vertigo & Headache Symptoms: I'll be 50 next week. Am in good shape but could exercise a little more. Blood pressure is usually around 120 or 80 but has been a bit higher. Cholesterol at about 250. Heart rate at rest is as low as 47 at times. I just arrived on a 1.5 hour flight. Half way through the flight, I used the bathroom with no dfficult or dizziness or vertigo as all. When the flight landed at about 7:45, I was really dizzy when I stood up and it felt like I was at sea in a storm (I'm ex Navy). I'm a little nauseous but not sick and have a mild, pressure headach on the right side and my right ear hurts a little bit as it normally does when the pressure on the plane is not regulated as well as it could be. I also have a sore throat for the third day in a row. Both of my 15 month old twins are still getting over croup. I've never gotten vertigo like this before and am a bit worried. I'm in a hotel room and have been since about 30 minutes now. Vertigo is less but still present as is headache and very slight nausea. Am looking for your recommendation and would like to avoid the hospital as I have a big day tomorrow and haven't slept much in the last 72 hours. I'm hoping that the lack of sleep and upper respiratory virus (croup) are the primary cause...

Brief Answer:
It may all be because of the throat infection

Detailed Answer:
With your history you tell me that you have not slept for last 72 hours and recently had a throat infection, I don't think you have a serious concern. Our throat is joined by the middle ear by a tunnel called eustachian tube. So many a times when we URI we have fullness of the ear and also giddiness/ vertigo. Your vertigo is already settling down.

Sleep debt can create a lot of problems. Please take adequate rest and these symptoms should improve. You might also add tylenol and salt water gargles for additional relief. If they do not improve then you may show it to ENT doctor. I don't think this is anything else. Please be reassured. Yes if it does not recover do go to an ENT expert.
