Posted on Wed, 28 Jan 2015
Question: Hi there! I hit the top of my head on the freezer door as I was standing up from the fridge. I feel a little dizzy and have a gentle headache. This was about an hour ago. Should I be worried?

Brief Answer:
Shouldn't worry much unless other symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

From your description of the episode it is very unlikely for it to have any repercussions especially in a young presumably healthy woman like you. The mild headache you are experiencing is understandable after the hit. Over the counter acetaminophen 500-1000mg should help relieving the pain.

However it never hurts to be cautious so I'm going to mention some signs which should worry you or people living close to you if manifested during the next 24 hours such as:

-Intense or progressively growing in intensity headache
-Marked or progressively worsening dizziness with difficulty walking and standing
-Drowsiness
-Vomiting
-Confusion, behavior deemed peculiar by those close to you
-Weakness of a limb
-Doubling of vision or other visual problems
-Inability to remember events prior or after to injury (not tour of course).
-Seizures

If such phenomena are noted a visit to ER for evaluation and if considered necessary by the exam a CT scan is recommended. Also if you suffer some disease which affects coagulation or taking some blood thinning drug level of suspicion should be higher and evaluation recommended.

I remain at your disposal for further questions.

Hi Dr. Taka,

Thanks very much for your comprehensive reply, very reassuring! I am a fairly healthy individual and don't have any other diseases or take any other medication, so hopefully all will clear up. The headache is not getting worse, but I have passed on the list of symptoms to those who live with me just in case they notice any of them.

Thanks once again!
