Posted on Wed, 12 Jul 2017
Question: Hi, for the last 4 to 5 weeks my 40 year old son has complained of pain in the back of his head right above his neck. When he stands he feels so dizzy he can't walk. Also he coughs so hard he feels like he will throw up but so far he hasn't. In Oct. he hurt his lower back in a car accident. He was in back braces for 3 months, then a cane and he had therphy. Don't know if this is all related or if new symtoms are something new. thank you worried mom

Brief Answer:
Let him get a CT-Scan of the head and neck region!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.

This pain might be related to the accident. It’s my thinking that the accident might have impacted the structures at the level of the neck region. I will suggest he gets an imaging study to look at the bony structures in this area. This will allow us to tell whether the structures are intact or not and whether they could be compressing nearby blood vessels leading to dizziness when he’s in an upright position. Discuss this with his doctor and communicate findings/outcome with me.

I hope this guides and helps. I wish your son well. Feel free to follow up with me as soon as you get new details or information.
