Posted on Tue, 1 Apr 2014
Question: I had a nightmare 2 weeks ago and it really disturbed me. I was on Tradamol for about a week when the nightmare occurred. I was a pedophile and I hurt my son and other children. I have been having thoughts of the similar nature when I'm around children and my son, it really frightens me because I would never do this. I'm a 27 year old female, its disgusting and it's affecting my day life. Is there anyway to stop these thoughts? They make me frightened that I am this monster but I would never hurt my son. I have night terrors that I hurt and kill other children. I really never ever thought about this before the nightmare. Is there something seriously wrong with me????

Brief Answer: May be due to some underline stress Detailed Answer: HI Thanks for using healthcare magic. I, Dr Abhishek Kapoor, would help to solve the query. In adult, night terror can occur due to improper diet, does not getting the appropriate amount or quality of sleep or enduring stressful events etc. In your case, it may be due to some underline stress or sleep disturbance. There is nothing to worry about it. You can try low dose benzodiazepine that would help to get sound sleep and frequency of these dreams would decrease. Better to consult a psychiatrist for proper mental status evaluation and get prescribe drugs if you want. You can also take help of psychologist to share your thoughts or psychotherapy. In case, you need further help, you can ask. Regards Dr. Abhishek Kapoor Psychiatrist

Hi , Thanks for the response. Would they risk assess me if I went to the docs about this? I'm scared my son would be reviewed. I would never hurt my son. I'm just afraid of involving child services etc when there is no risk. Is there any therapy that I can do at home? I would prefer to stay away from meds at all costs. Thanks

Brief Answer: Try some relaxation exercise at home Detailed Answer: Hi Thanks for showing your trust on me. As a therapist, we try to assess patient's thoughts. Nights terror usually happens due to some psychological issue at unconscious level. May be these days, due to some issues at home, you are in stress and due to this, you have such dreams. It would not involve any child service. Psychiatrist would just assess your mental status and if you want, then can prescribe you some sleeping pills. In case, you do not want to take any medication, you can do relaxation exercise in form deep breathing, yoga. meditation etc. You can try some life style modification steps like morning or evening walk, follow balance diet, maintain proper sleep, avoid excessive stimulants etc. Try to keep yourself calm and gradually such dream would over. In case, you need further help, you can ask. Regards Dr. Abhishek Kapoor Psychiatrist
