Brief Answer: Dysguesia. Detailed Answer: Hi, Thank you for your query. 1. Dysguesia or a distorted taste in the mouth is likely to be due to either of the following reasons: a. Drug induced, such as the Celecoxib (Celebrex). If so, it will reduce in time. I am assuming that you are not on any other medication at present. b. Acid or Bile reflux. c. Damage to taste buds on the tongue sometimes unexplained or due to dehydration, food allergy, recent viral or fungal infection, multi-vitamin or zinc deficiency. d. I am also assuming that you do not have high blood pressure, diabetes or any other major co-existing disease. If any of these are suspected, then a medical and neurological opinion will be helpful to rule out any stroke or central (brain-sensory) problem. 2. I would recommend an anti-reflux medication, a non-sedating anti-allergic, a medicated gargle and investigations / opinions on the lines above. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them. Regards.

I don't have high blood pressure, diabetes or any other disease that I am aware of. I have taken a prescription drug for acid reflux for a couple years. I am not aware of any allergies. What is an anti allergic med?

Brief Answer: As below: Detailed Answer: Hi, Thank you for writing back. 1.Anti-allergic medications are commonly known as anti-histamines. Many of these cause drowsiness. A few such as loratidine (Claritin) and fexofenadine (Allergra) do not cause drowsiness. These are usually taken only once a day. 2. It is good to hear that you do not have any high blood pressure, diabetes or any other major co-existing disorder. This helps rule out many causes. 3. You have not mentioned exactly which kind of neuralgia (nerve pain) led to the month long course of Celebrex. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them. Regards.

It was a pinched nerve in my back that resulted in pain in my right hip and difficult to walk. An MRI has been scheduled for this week. I don't have any allergies that I am aware of. This bad/rotten taste in my mouth started about a week ago and I have no appetite and feeling quite depressed. I had a similar episode last summer and my doctor had Xrays done to my nasal passage but showed nothing was wrong.

Brief Answer: As below: Detailed Answer: Hi, Thank you for writing back. 1. In this case, the most likely cause will be drug induced Celebrex. 2. The second most common cause is likely to be acid reflux. Hence I would suggest that you continue with the anti-reflux medication. 3. It is always better to get a direct tongue and throat examination done. 4. I must emphasize that in many cases, the exact cause may never be found. Hence if the dysguesia settles down with these measures, there is no need for further investigations. If you have any further questions, I will be available to answer them. Regards.
