Question: I have difficulty swallowing saliva from my mouth. I have no pain. My lower throat seems to have "closed in a little". I can eat and drink normally. I am generally a healthy person. I do not drink alcohol or smoke. I am a male aged 65 and fairly fit.

Dr. Hanif warmly Welcomes you to my virtual clinic HCM!
I have carefully worked through your case, and can realize your health worries. Being your physician, I will take care all of your medical concerns.

It seems to be just a mild to moderate irritation of the throat. Or it happens when the throat dries up and we try to swallow.

Not a big issue of serious medical concern that may need immediate emergency care as you are easy at passing food and liquids. If you had difficulty swallowing the food or the liquids too then this was an issue of concern and I would have preferably suggested you to go for an esophagoscopy. You have no chance of foreign body, cancerous growth or other such serious issues right now.

What you need is assurance and some management options should be kept in mind:
*Plenty of water (clean bottled water).
*Gargles with an appropriate mouthwash. If not allergic to Listerine OR Clinica are good ones.
*Take a Vicks Warm Mist Humidifier and always keep it ON in room for proper and easy respiration and to decrease throat irritation.
*Chew sometimes the sugar free bubble gum. It helps salivary secretion.
*Fruits and vegetables, salads and fruit juices especially carrot and orange juice made at home is good for you.
*No tea, coffee, chocolates, caffeinated drinks, energy drinks, soda and hot or cold beverages etc etc.
*No junk food, spicy and fried food, no refined foods. No artificial flavors.
*Avoid pollen, animal dander. No pets inside the home.
*Avoid extremes of weather. When going out take a bottle of drinking water with you.
*Take tablet Ebastine.
*Tablet Prednisone.

Have a wonderful time ahead. Hope I answered all of your questions. Let me know if you have any further clinical concerns or doubts. I will be more than happy to get back to you in no time. If satisfied here, please give a generous five star rating and don't forget to close the discussion.
For any disease you have, a timely follow-up after sometime regarding the treatment efficacy and to see any need to change the treatment options is very necessary. Keep a follow up some days after this visit session ends.
