Posted on Tue, 8 Dec 2015
Question: I am currently on allergy medication (Flonase & Zyrtec) and Cholesterol medication. Lately, I am having a difficult time swallowing food. It feels like my throat is constricted, making swallowing somewhat difficult. Could this be an allergy symptom?

Brief Answer:
difficulty swallowing occurs in severe allergic reactions

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

In a severe allergic reaction there can be difficulty swallowing due to swelling of the tongue and structures in the throat but this is not normally present in non severe every day allergy symptoms.

Difficulty swallowing can sometimes occur in: (1) reflux
(2)may indicate that there is a structural block for some reason in the throat eg stricture or mass
(3)trauma causing swelling
(4)side effect of medication
(5)vitamin b12 deficiency leading to problems with nerve function
(6)related to the brain and the coordination of muscle and nerve function
(7)thyroid disease
(8)disorders of muscles

If it is continuous, worsening or severe then you should consider assessment by your doctor.
This would include physical examination, blood tests (vitamin b12, thyroid, creatine - to check muscle), imaging eg endoscopy.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
