What Causes Diarrhea When Diagnosed With Collagenous Colitis?

default
Posted on Mon, 17 Apr 2017
Question: I was diagnosed with collagenous colitis after a colonoscopy. My symptoms are sometimes diarrhea, incomplete evacuation, leaky gut (fecal incontinence minutes or hours after a bowel movement). I read somewhere that a gluten free diet may help heal the intestine. I have tried it for 7-10 days and noted no change. Is there any diet that might help? The only medication I take when the diarrhea is bad is immodium.

Brief Answer:
require further treatment for colitis

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I can understand your concern for your symptoms.
1) Gluten free diet will be more effective in Celiac disease which affect proximal part of small intestine (duodenum) more than colon. Role of gluten free diet in any form of colitis is questionable.
2) you should take Immodium for diarrhea but this medication will not affect underlying condition which is responsible for diarrhea.
3) Thus you need colitis specific medications which are helpful to treat underlying condition such as collagenous collitis, Cronh's disease, ulcertative colitis.
4) These specific medications are steroid, azathioprine (Immunosuppresant), Salicylic acid.
5) Also I would recommend to continue follow up with medical gastroenterologist for this condition.

Hope I answered your query. If you have any further doubts, I would be happy to help you.
Have a nice day!
