What Causes Diarrhea, Stomach Cramps And Blood In Stools?

default
Posted on Sat, 14 Feb 2015
Question: Hello, I am currently working with my health care provider about a possible diagnoses of Crohn's. I have had many of the symptoms associated with this condition such as sever cramping, diarrhea/constipation (with occasional bright red blood in the toilet) and nausea. All of these symptoms are from an abundance of gas throughout my GI tract. I have had these symptoms for years, but it seems to be getting worse. I recently had blood work that came back negative for anemia or inflammation. I have a upper and lower scope set for next month, but she is pretty sure that I can rule out Crohn's and Ulcerative Colitis do to the blood work. Do you concur?

Brief Answer:
I strongly recommend colonoscopy with biopsy before reaching a final diagnosis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
I read your query and understood your concerns.

You are reporting to have diarrhea severe cramping and red blood in stools. These symptoms may be related to inflammatory bowel disease (IBD which include Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), hemorrhoids or anal fissure.

The gold standard to diagnose IBD is colonoscopy with biopsy. This is why I strongly recommend colonoscopy with biopsy before reaching a final diagnosis.

Moreover it‘s true that blood work results are altered in IBD (anemia and high numbers of leukocyte). However this doesn’t happen in mild forms of IBD.

Hope this information was helpful!

Thanks Doc! I will follow up with the colonoscopy, but in your professional onion, with the blood results the way they are, is it unlikely that IBD is the cause?

Brief Answer:
There's a low probability that IBD is the cause of your symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hi back,

Your blood results are normal. My opinion is that there's a low probability that IBD is the cause of your symptoms. You should wait for colonoscopy results which will definitely exclude IBS and will found the right diagnosis.

Wish you health!
