What Causes Diarrhea, Phlegm, Facial And Nasal Passage Swelling?

default
Posted on Thu, 22 May 2014
Question: My mother went to the ER on 4/29 with the following symptoms: diarrhea, phlegm, facial and nasal passage swelling and hives. While in the ER she was admitted and after blood testing was told that she is severely diabetic. She's been on an IV since admittance and has been recieving prednisone thru the IV. She was released this morning and is now complaining that her right foot is causing problems when walking. She says that it "drops" rather than rolling in a heel/toe motion. Could this be caused from the steroids and should we return to the ER to have it checked out?

Brief Answer:
Not by steroids/ needs return to ER

Detailed Answer:
Hi.

Thanks for your query and concern for your Mother and an elucidate history.

Absolutely yes, you should return to ER to have it checked out.

Back to the History.
Mother is an elderly patient of 70 years and was admitted with with diarrhea, phlegm, facial and nasal passage swelling and hives.

I can understand that steroids must have been given for hives. But steroids can increase the already elevated blood sugar. Of course the Doctors over there must have taken this in account.

What are the reports of blood, particularly blood sugar?

The foot-drop can not be caused by the steroids , this is for sure.

She needs to be investigated by a Clinical examination about the exact degree of foot drop, good neurological evaluation, and investigations as per the findings.

To summarize, diabetes should be under control , steroid be weaned off if possible, needs return to ER immediately and investigations and treatment for foot drop needed.
