What Causes Depression In An Alcoholic?

default
Posted on Tue, 20 Dec 2016
Question: My 49 year old son has been on risperdal since 2009. He presently is on only 1 mg/day. Recently I noticed that he is more depressed and has had trouble keeping up his home etc.. When I visited this weekend he told me that he has stared drinking 3 Tecate beers a day. For a long while he had been having one and did not use it at all in winter. Now he discovered he enjoys it year 'round. Could that be causing his lethargy? Is it dangerous?

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

Alcohol in any form can lead to depression, disorganization, and lethargy, particularly for someone who is taking Risperdal. Alcohol makes the side effects of Risperdal worse, and vice versa. I strongly urge your son to stop drinking beer in order to preserve his mental health.
