What Causes Delay In Periods?

default
Posted on Tue, 30 Dec 2014
Question: I had a late period (approx 4-5 days late) which was really very light spotting. (I am not pregnant, there is no chance of that). I became concerned and went to see a new OB/GYN on Monday. Exam was normal, and tests were run. Not all labs are back but the current numbers were,
CA 125 (15) Thyroid pending Tsh t4 t3 normal (told they were normal) Hematocrit 40 Urinalysis (trace of blood) Hormones- pending FSH 2.7 LH 2.4
These numbers were taken after the spotting had basically stopped altogether. I know have what appears to be the beginning of a period, which is not considered a 40 day cycle with spotting last week. I will be speaking with my Dr hopefully the beginning of next week, and will be having an ultrasound on 12/19.
Is this most likely hormonal? I am 36, and have recently been doing more lifting at work.
I meant to say, I now have what appears to be the beginning of a period which would make the cycle approx 40 days long with spotting around day 30 or 31 which lasted for 4-5 days.

Brief Answer:
Normal variation in periods

Detailed Answer:
Hi

I read your query and I understand your concerns.

Following is my reply

1. It is normal to have delayed periods once in a while in every woman.

2. The common reason for such delayed being stress in personal or prefessional life, Excessive physical activity or Excercise more than routine, pressure situations like examination in school or presentation in office, or change of place, town etc.

3. Since you mentioned weight lifting that could be the reason for delayed periods which is common.

4. Your investigations appear normal. I expect even pending investigation reports to be hopefully normal.

5. Let me reassure you that this is normal and hence not to worry. There is nothing major underlying disease.

Is the spotting (five days of very light spotting) then no spotting, for a few days, then a "normal period" within a 40 day time period something that can happen with no underlying disease or threatening cause?

Brief Answer:
Yes. It can happen

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Yes. This pattern of bleeding can normally happen.
This is due to shedding of endometrium at later stage.

There is absolutely no possibility of underlying disease.
