What Causes Delay In Periods?

default
Posted on Wed, 10 Sep 2014
Question: My periods not just delay, it does not happen at all. When I see my doc she gives me Deviry tablets and a few vitamin tablets and then the periods start within 10 days. Also, I am not sure if it is due to stress but I see blood spots almost every 10 to 12 days. It usually happens 2 or 3 days after I go to my dance class. I am leading a stressed life due to personal issues. I have had a complete health check and even scanning done (for PCOS and thyroid) but I do not have any health issues. I would like to have a baby in another 2 years and now I am scared. What do I do? Am I fertile?

Brief Answer:
It can be treated. You can conceive.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The delay in periods like you are having can be due to hormonal imbalance, emotional upset, anxiety, stress, or other medical conditions that affect the ovaries, uterus, hypothalamus, or pituitary gland like polycystic ovarian syndrome or less frequently a pituitary tumor causing high prolactin levels or a hypothalamic disease.
All this indicates a decreased fertility but you can conceive after a proper treatment.
Since the ultrasound scan is normal you need hormonal tests of FSH, LH, Estrogen, Progesterone, Androstenedione, Thyroid hormones, etc.
The treatment is mainly medical treatment with Oral contraceptive pills for some time which will make your menstrual cycles become regular. But most important is exercising to lose weight and becoming fit. If exercise is not done then the hormonal imbalance will still be there. Proper diet consisting of low carbohydrates, low fat diet with plenty of fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables is needed. Drink plenty of water. Do daily brisk walking for 40 minutes. Avoid junk food, pastries, colas.

Kindly consult a leading Gynecologist and get yourself examined completely and also get the tests done as mentioned above. Once diagnosis is confirmed by ultrasound and hormones tests, the treatment can begin, but as I mentioned again, diet and exercise are the most important for cure and not just the medication alone.
Whenever you plan to conceive, ovulation inducing drugs will help you.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
