What Causes Delay In Period With History Of Miscarriage And Abortion?

default
Posted on Tue, 3 Feb 2015
Question: My wife is 38/39 yrs old. DOB:- 14/04/76. Her menstrual cycle starts between 15 to 18th of every month.
Last 15th Nov'14 she had period (menstruation) which was of a small amount. There after till date she did not have the period though her last date of period was supposed to be started 15/18th Dec'2014. She checked the pregnancy color test twice but those are found negative. The next cycle is coming on 15/18th Jan'15. For your additional information she had abortion twice earlier and one miscarriage in last jan'2009.
Please let us know what are the suspected reason of it? What are the medication to be adopted ? What can we do as best at this juncture? is it normal considering her age?
Regards,

Brief Answer:
Mild hormonal disturbance likely

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.
At 39, menstrual irregularities often occur.
There can be a few reasons for a delayed period - stress, anxiety, emotional turbulence, weight gain, exercise, travelling, smoking , drinking, late nights, erratic eating etc.
If she misses her period next month too, then she needs to consult a gynecologist.
Conditions like polycystic ovaries, approaching menopause, fibroid etc need to be ruled out.
The workup should include - internal examination, pelvic ultrasound scan , Pap smear and hormonal levels ( FSH, LH, TSH).
This will reveal a reason.
If the tests are normal, this is assumed to be mild disturbance in cycles, normal at this age, and can be corrected by giving progesterone tablets for a few days to regulate the cycles.
All the best
