default
Posted on Wed, 18 Mar 2015
Question: Hi, I am currently on Ovofar 100 mg and Duphaston 10 mg for the last 3 months. My last month's periods starting date was 23rd XXXXXXX but lasted just for 3 days which is unusual for me as my periods usually lasts for 5-7 days.
This month, its 22nd Feb but no periods till date but light cramps at times in the lower abdomen.
What could be the cause?

Brief Answer:
hormonal variations are the cause

Detailed Answer:
Hello

I understand your concerns about delayed periods and reduced flow.

You have been taking combination of hormonal medicines which control the periods.

Especially Duphaston contains progesterone hormone. These medicines cause variations in body hormones that naturally occurring and lead to changes in periods as you are facing.

But let me reassure you that everything is fine and you can continue medicines under your doctor's guidance.

Let me know if you need any more clarifications.

Hi,

Thank you for your response.
What I actually wanna know is could I be pregnant as this time even when on duphaston, its beyond 28 days but I still did not get my periods.
Am on Glycyphage 1.5 for polycystic ovary, Folvite, Ovofar 100 mg and Duphaston 10 mg. This month, my duphaston lasted till 16th Feb ( 16-25 day of the menstrual cycle) and prescribed for inter course dates from the 10th day of the cycle (every alternate day).

Under these circumstances, is it possible that I could be pregnant? This is my 3rd Clomid cycle.

Please get serum beta hCG blood test done to confirm pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for additional details.

Yes. It is possible that you are pregnant. These medicines you are taking help pregnancy and continue it.

Since you have missed periods I suggest you get pregnancy test done. Please get serum beta hCG blood test done to confirm pregnancy because home pregnancy test might give negative result so soon.

Let me know the results for me to interprit.

Thank u for your response.

Besides my above details, I forgot to mention the detailed dates of my course for Ovofar and Duphaston which started since December, 2014.. So this is the 3rd cycle.
My periods date in December after Duphaston (last dose on 15.12.14) was 26.12.14
Duphaston date in January got over on 19th of the month and periods started from 23rd.
Then in this month, my Duphaston got over on 16 Feb, till date (24/02/15) I didn't get my periods.
So based on this cycle, if I go for a blood test within a day or two, the test which you have mentioned about in your last reply, will I get the accurate result now? Or should wait for few more days to get the test done.

Else, would get a blood test done by tomorrow.
Moreover, after how many days should I go for the home pregnancy test?

Hi,

I have had a blood and urine test today.
The urine test is said to be negative but will have to wait for the blood test for a day or two. Even the urine test is done at the clinic and not with the use of home pregnancy kit.
Is there any difference between the two tests?
Can the blood test report be different from the urine test? It might have got too early for the urine test..but might show the accurate result with the blood test. Is there any such possibility?
I still did not get my periods and really worried that if its really a no pregnancy case, then my periods r not getting regular with the help of duphaston as well.

Please kindly clarify.

Brief Answer:
Serum beta hCG is most accurate test

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

It is very early for home pregnancy test to be positive as I had mentioned earlier. There is no difference between kit done in hospital and home. They are jdifferent brands only.

Blood test ( serum beta hCG) is earliest to be positive.

Let me tell you that duphaston can only regularize the periods temporarily only. Sometimes even duphaston fails to regularize periods as progesterone given is not enough.

Anyway wait for blood test report as of now and see the result.

I hope your question is answered.

Let me know if you need further clarification / advice.

Dr. Soumya
