default
Posted on Mon, 31 Jul 2017
Question: hello .. i workout and i always tend to lift too much n too heavy too fast .. basically i knw the cause od my problem but i cant seem to figure out if i am suffering from inflammation or just tight muscle knots that need to be released .. i had inflammation in my shoulders/rotator cuffs back in 2015 and to be honest i was never 100% cleared from it but i worked around it .. revently for the past weeks i have been feeling soreness in the same shoulders (left) .. i always feel tightness in the area when i wake up but also feeling pain that shoots from my upper chest to the shoulder to my upper back .. the pain is not ALWAYS there but comes n goes .. whn i workout there is no pain but after i am done even though i do proper mobility work and stretching i feel that pain and tightness .. i do foam rolling often but its still the same .. i felt better after having a deep tissue massage a few days ago but i proceeded with working out n the pain came back .. so basically it is a mix of pain tightness and soreness ..

Brief Answer:
Can be due to muscle spasm.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The tightness and soreness in the area seems to be due to a muscle spasm due to overuse or undue stretching of the muscles.
Sometimes, it can be due to dehydration, muscle fatigue or electrolyte abnormalities. It is better to drink sufficient fluid and also see that your intake of electrolytes (sodium, potassium, magnesium ) is sufficient. You can drink Oralyte for this.
Doing too much, too soon and too fast creates problem
Repeated injuries cause formation of scar tissue and subsequently complete healing doesn't take place .
Other factors are
Poor fitness levels and lack of regular exercises
Poor nutrition and obesity
Such spasms can be treated by (1) treating the underlying cause (2) keeping yourself well hydrated (3) stretching the muscles involved (4) the use of anti inflammatory medication such as ibuprofen, cataflam with meals provided there are no contraindications to their use (5) a muscle relaxant may be necessary

It may be best, if possible to visit your doctor for a thorough assessment and treatment plan.

I hope this answers your query.
