What Causes Deep Dry Hacking Cough For The Past 3 Months?

default
Posted on Thu, 12 May 2016
Question: For the last 3 months I have had a deep dry hacking cough. It appears after 2 to 3 hours of time lasting usually 10 minutes or so. There seems to be an accumulation of clear mucus that I can spit up. I also get a sore throat with this and am continually sucking on cough drops.
I have coughed so hard that I have injured my ribs.
I don't have a temperature or typical running nose like a cold.
My arnp has tried antibotics, and prednisone. The prednisone did help some. I also have an inhaler, nose drops, and a codine cough syrup that really helps.
I don't know if it is a virus or allergy. I am not prone to have allergies. We live on the coast of XXXXXXX State where the weather is damp and dreary.
I am not going out in public typically and it is difficult to get a goods nights rest.
Any suggestions ???

Brief Answer:
Please provide more information, cough expectorant is advisable

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am
welcome to health care magic
I have gone through your question very diligently and I will try to help you out in best possible way.
At the outset I would like further information for better assessment of the condition like

Have you lost any weight recently or during last 3 months?
Have you undergone any investigation like blood test or X Ray chest, if yes than upload me the reports
Your relevant medical history like diabetes, high blood pressure, thyroid disease or joint disease
which antibiotics you have taken?
How's your appetite?

Since you are not having temperature or running nose which doesn't rule out viral infection or allergy completely, however long standing coughing for 2 to 3 months warrnats detailed evaluation like chest examination, blood test like CBC, ESR, sputum microscopy for TB and X Ray chest or CT chest if need be, to find out the underlying cause for cough.

Meanwhile I would advise you to take expectorant cough syrup like bromhexine and anti allergic drug like levocetirizine or fexofenadine group of drugs.
You can take honey mixed with ginger juice as a home remedies and steam inhalation which will dilute your mucus and other secretion and help in coughing it out.

Hope I could answer your question, please write back to me with these details I have asked for, so that I will be able to tell you more precisely.
waiting for your reply
Best wishes
