What Causes Dark Urine Despite Having Normal Kidney Test Reports?

default
Posted on Fri, 13 May 2016
Question: I feel like I havent been urinating much today. when I go it's really concentrated and not much came out. I have worked all day and have been outside, No heavy labor but I got a very slight sunburn on my neck.
I didn't drink much, maybe 10 oz of water in the morning and maybe 8 oz around 4:30 pm.
I urinated maybe 2 times and it was very little and dark.
This kind of freaked me out so I used a urine test strip from my neighbor. It checks for blood, protein, and like 10 things. If I was having a problem with my kidneys wouldnt it show something on there.
My last checkup was 2 months ago and everything was normal.
My urine checked out normal.
If I was having a problem with my kidneys wouldn't the test be off?

Brief Answer:
Kidney problem would be highly unlikely.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to HCM.

I have read your query and understand the concern.

If your water intake was less and you have been worked outside for a whole day,I would not think your concentrated urine, straightway abnormal.

Urine quantity and frequency become decreased because of low water intake and insensible water loss from body (means through sweating when working outside in sunlight).

Since you have tested through urine strip and it checked out to be normal (as you said), I do not think there could be a something in kidney.

However, to clear any doubt I would suggest you to test urine sample (for routine micro) at some nearby pathology laboratory.

Urine tests is highly sensitive and less specific test,so mostly it shows something positive if your kidney has some issue (like blood in urine, protein in urine or excess pus cells).

But it is highly unlikely to be having some kidney problem in your case in my opinion but go for urine tests for a safer side.

Till the time drink plenty of water in a day (minimum 3 to 4 liters a day) which will be helpful to flush urinary system.

Hope this helps.
