What Causes Cough With Phlegm, Hot Sweats And White Spots On Tonsils?

Question: Symptoms: Blood tests two days ago:CRP is 12.7 - was 6 on last physical 3 mos ago. Sed rate ONLY 7. WBC and RBC in normal range. One month ago started with extreme pain over left eye, pain when moving eyes back and forth, heavy drainage/phlegm down back of throat (note that nose NEVER ran or got stuffy) extreme coughing including coughing up phlegm, asthma, white spot on tonsils, very wet hot sweats on and off throughout the day and difficulty breathing/catching breath. Went through two rounds of antibiotics and two rounds off prednisone. Near the end of prednisone I had pain across top of mouth above teeth, especially when I was chewing - pain was not at jaw. When off Prednisone I woke in the middle of night with extreme headache and soak and wet: pain was at temple, over eye, on top of head, behind ear and at base of neck all on the left side. All areas were also somewhat painful and sensitive to touch. Dr. put back on low dose steroids. Headache went away until worked back down to day with none. I then Woke with headache again almost as bad but not quite as first time. Back on steroids, cut back down to 1 - 2.5 dose and went one day Prednisone or headache. Headache came back again this morning - slight but was slowly getting worse by the hour so back on steroids. I also have pain in the joint of my left big tow - started an hour ago. What should I be doing at this point. Testing? I feel extremely tired.

Dear Madam,

Thank you for posting your query on HCM.

Well looking into your problem I would like to tell you that I am not able to get the fact why were u started on steroids . Can you please give the reason why were you started on that . Rest what you mention white spots on tonsils , it can be either bacterial infection or fungal . And all the symptoms you tell are suggestive of infection only . Please mention entire details so that we are able to help you in a better way .

Take care.

When I woke up the first time with extreme headache, I took 2 Advil and headache did not respond within an hour and 1/2, so it occurred to me that it might be a result of coming off the steroids so I took a half of a dose of steroid and the headache subsided within a half hour. My Dr. thought it might be a mild Temporal Arteritis. The original round of steroids was because I had what Dr. thought was asthma along with the infection in Bronchial. I have allergic asthma when exposed to cat dander, dust mites and for about 1 month in the spring. I am not on asthma medicine usually and usually have no symptoms I am careful to avoid triggers. I thought infection may still be present as well, but my white blood count was normal a few days ago, I have no more cough. I do still have a little drainage down back of throat... The thing that concerns me is I never have headaches. I can't remember the last time I had one, so this is very unusual for me. What test should I request? Headache keeps coming back right at the temple eye area usually at night (twice) or in the morning after waking, steroids make it subside. I DO NOT want to be on steroids any longer unless I absolutely have to, and I want to rule out infection - needless to say.

Dear Madam,

Thank you for reverting back.

Well headache that responds to steroids and also causing pain in the eye can be temporal arteritis . Since it responds to steroids that makes the diagnosis very likely although your ESR is low . I would advise you to get a USG temporal artery done and also if they can plan temporal biopsy to prove it . If you are having temporal arteritis you will need to take steroids for long time as its a serious condition and can threaten your vision also .
