What Causes Cough, Stuffy Nose And Drowsiness Post Intercourse?

default
Posted on Fri, 22 Apr 2016
Question: 2 weeks ago my boyfriend and I had unprotected sex and I tasted some blood on his penis when I was giving him oral sex. A week or so afterwards he started complaining about a stuffy nose and now he has a cough that had produced a scratchy throat. He says he feels fine but he still has the stuffy nose when he wakes up daily. He has also complained about feeling sleepy and he usually is a ball of energy.

I have not been tested for HIV, but I had some fear of it due to an oral sex encounter with a female over the summer, 8 months ago now. She made me aware of her HIV negative status, but I had a cold and some other issues about 2 months after our encounter.

I had a really bad sinus infection back in December too that scared me a lot.

Anyway, could my boyfriend be suffering from early HIV symptoms and he and I both should get tested?

It's scaring me very much because it seems he's coming down with something.

Brief Answer:
Unlikely due to HIV.Better to get tested to relieve anxiety.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for query. Welcome back to health care magic.
I am Dr Bharatesh D Basti answering your query. I have gone through the details.

The symptoms of your boy friend may be due to respiratory tract infection or sinus infection .It may be due to respiratory contact with any person. It does not suggest HIV.These are non specific symptoms.
Once there is no source of HIV there is no possibility of transmission of HIV.So if your female friend is not infected, likely you are not infected. So the possibility of you transmitting infection is nil.
But it may be better if you both get tested for HIV.

You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you

Ok. Thank you. So the symptoms of HIV are severe and would be unmistakable? Do these symptoms sound like regular cold symptoms?

Yes, the female said she was negative but the timing of my boyfriends symptoms are within 2 weeks of us having sex and oral sex. Don't HIV symptoms usually begin to show within this time frame?

I may have had some spotting when we had unprotected sex but nothing significant. He also ejaculated inside of me so there was fluid exchange.

Can you review my previous submission of questions to go over what happened with the female?

Brief Answer:
Better to get tested as routine.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thank you for follow up query.

I have gone through the details of previous query.
It appears there is almost no risk .
As there are multiple partners for both of you,it may be better to go for HIV/other STDs tests as routine.
The symptoms can occur due to any simple respiratory tract infections too.
The symptoms do not suggest HIV.Symptoms usually do not occur so soon.HIV is diagnosed by tests only and not by these symptoms. There should be a source of HIV.Only if the person was exposed to HIV you can acquire it .If she was negative there is no chance.
So just both of you go for tests and get relieved of your anxiety.

You can get back for any clarification.
Thank you
