Question: I'm 72 white female; at night my ankles and feet continuously twitch - there is no pain. Should I be concerned about this?

This types of twitching can occur as a result of:
1. Neuropathic Pain.
2. Restless leg syndrome
3. Hypocalcemia

I would like to know a few more details:
1.Since how long are you having such sensations?
2.Do you get urge to move your legs?
3.Is there any relief on moving your gets?
4.Occur only in night time? Or also some time in day time?
5.Any history of numbness?
6.Any history of diabetes, anemia, or any drug (medication) intake for long?
7.Any history of osteoarthritis or pain in knee joints?
8.Any history of alcohol or smoking?

Follow up: Dr. Anshul Varshney (19 hours later)
1. How long? about six months
2. Yes, have urge to move my legs and feet, mostly at ankles
3. Yes, movement relieves impulse and twitch, but it recurs in a few minutes
4. Mostly noticed at night time, does occur occasionally during day
5. No real numbness in legs or feet but sometimes skin sensation of numbness
6. No history of diabetes or anemia; have herpes simplex and have been taking Xyloprim or generics for over 10 years.
7. Had knee surgery for torn ligament and possibly early arthritis last year.
8. No alcohol or smoking

I'm 72 and still working full time, basically healthy except for weight.

Restless Leg Syndrome is a possibility

Detailed Answer:
Dear Friend.
Your history goes in favor of Restless Leg Syndrome.
I would advise you a certain tests to rule out any other possibility to support this diagnosis.
1. Hemogram
2. Liver and Kidney Function Test
3. Fasting Blood Sugar
4. Serum Ferritin.
5. Serum Calcium
6. Vitamin D3 levels.

In such condition, i start my patient on Ropinirole.
But i would advise you to review me with the above mentioned investigations.
Once i have the investigations, i would be able to guide you on treatment.
