Question: My mother had problem of sleeping disorder since 23 oct 2014, there was no past history for such kind of any problem before that. We consult to doctor and he prescribed Franxit and Clonotril. She took medicince for 15 days and she had better sleep and rest during those 15 days. But after those 15 days she had problem like Constipation, acidity, drymouth, Vometing etc i informed to doctor about this and than he stopped Franxit and Clonotril for few days. Now she is taking only Clonotril and problem of Constipation, acidity, drymouth, Vometing is still persisting. Is it side effect of those medicine? Doctor said she has sleeping disorder so if a person unable to get sleep than problem like Constipation, acidity is very common. But this problem was consisting till 19 XXXXXXX 2015. She performed so many test and her Widal test report was 160. On 21 XXXXXXX 2015 we again perform the test and now her widal is 640. Is it confirm case of typhoid? She has"nt any past history about bacterial infection. although she has not any body pain or fever.
Docter prescribe her to take Ceftum 500. Which test should i perform to confirm about if there is any perforation in her Intestine because she noticed to have redish colour stool since last night.
Should i start some other medicince?
When typhoid can be fatal?
what are the diet that she should follow?

Brief Answer:
Typhoid can be chronically present without any fever or presenting symptoms

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for asking on HealthcareMagic.

I do not think that the mentioned problems are side effects of the prescribed medicines. Rather, it could be that your mother got typhoid somehow and the symptoms resulted from this infection. The medicines could have incidentally been co-prescribed getting noted incidously.

1:640 in Widal test is definitely positive and indicates Typhoid fever. If the infection is still not under control, the titres can rise as in your mother's case. Typhoid can occur even without fever and can be present chronically without your being aware of it. So, you might be unaware of its onset. It is spread through contaminated water and there need not be any past history of any bacterial infection. Typhoid is a gastrointestinal infection and can manifest with gastrointestinal problems like nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, constipation etc. It may cause small ulcers in the intestine causing blood to be present in the stool. It need not indicate intestinal perforation which is a much grave condition.

In case you wish to become doubly sure abou the diagnosis of typhoid, you can get Typhoid IgM and IgG antibodies tested which are likely to return positive results indicating acute infection of typhoid. A simple straight X ray abdomen in erect posture will help in ruling out intestinal perforation. Stool for occult blood is the test required to confirm the blood in stool.

Your doctor has done the right thing in prescribing Ceftum 500 which can successfully treat typhoid. If I had a patient like her, I would perhaps prescribed Zanocin (Ofloxacin) 200 mg 1 tablet twice daily to be taken for 7 days alongside Ceftum.

Typhoid is unlikely to be fatal.

There are no dietary restrictions for typhoid. Just give a normal diet low on oils and spices and things should be fine.

Hope that helps

I am very much satisfied with your answer and definitely it seemed very helpful for me......But there is some doubt that i would like to put before you .........when i talked to my doctor about favorable condition for typhoid he said me that there may also some external factors which can lead to have typhoid ....as in my case i was suffering from sleeping disorder so it can also lead to restlessness and finally may lead to typhoid....is it like that? I am still taking sleeping pills .......i never had problem of sleeping disorder.......some people suggest me to go for MRI so that if there are any probability of tumor or any thing else than we can detect it at earlier stage which also can be reason of my sleeping disorder......because i did'nt know how this thing happened to me.....i used to sleep for 7 to 9 hr and now without taking sleeping pill i am not able to even get 2-3 hr sleep.......am i suppose to take slipping pill through out my life......is there any way to cure this problem?

Brief Answer:
Typhoid spreads by faeco-oral route alone, not otherwise

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for writing back.

Let me assure you that typhoid is a waterborne disease and spreads by faeco-oral route alone i.e. It either spreads though our faeces or enters our body through things that we take in orally, particularly water. It does not spread through sleeping pills and in not related to sleep disorders or feeling restless. If you are having difficulty with sleep, it does not mean that you have typhoid or could get it. Whoever has given such information, has guided you improperly.

Brain tumors do not generally manifest with sleep disorders. There are a number of symptoms including vomiting, seizures, severe headache, altered sensorium etc. that are often seen in case of brain tumors. I do not think that you need to be evaluated with an MRI just because you have sleeplessness.

Many people have trouble in falling asleep. It is often caused due to imbalance of the neurotransmitters in our brain. The medicines that are given to help you sleep, often develop tolerance and need to be taken in increasing doses to be subsequently fall asleep. Avoiding stimulants like coffee may help. I would also insist you to go in for light free-hand exercises. Reducing stress is one of the most important factors that will help you to sleep better. Lifestyle modification is the best intervention that you need.

Hope that helps
