The most common causes of increased size of a bile duct are: (1) normal variation- this may be a normal variation in some persons and is of no concern if the liver function tests are normal and there are no symptoms

(2) due to the passage or current presence of stones in the pancreatic duct, hepatic duct, cystic duct (from the gall bladder)

(3) due to any other lesions or masses within the liver, gallbladder, biliary passage or pancreas that may result in distension or increased prominence of the bile duct
