What Causes Cold And Sneezing Problem While Suffering From Conjunctivitis?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Apr 2015
Question: Hello Doctor, i am having cold and sneezing problem from last 2 months. It started from conjunctivitis. Below are the details:
1. I had redness and itching in my left eye. I consulted a doctor and they said its Allergy Conjunctivitis and gave me "Lotepred", "Acupate" and "Refresh EZEE". For first few days it was fine and then itching started again but in both eyes.
2. Then i consulted an another doctor and he said its just an allergy. He prescribe me "Systane Ultra" and "FML-T". but i didn't get any relief.
3. Then i noticed i am getting cold in the morning and after few days cold affect was reached to full day. I posted a query on this portal and got a reply to consult an allergist and general physician.
4. I didn't find any allergist near by and hence consulted General physician. They told me its a general allergy and advise me "Wikoryl(1-1-1)", "Novomox(1-0-1)" & "Salbid Expectorant" for 5 days. First day by cold was reduced but after that no benefits.
5. Consulted same physician after 5 days. This they again said its general allergy only and advise me Seacod(1-0-1) for 15 days and a course of "Montek 5mg(0-0-1)" for 30 days.
6. One full day my right eye was red and water coming out full day. There was etching and pain also. next day same thing happened to left eye.
7. Consulted same physician again(3rd time) after 5 more days. He advise me for a blood test for CBC,ESX,AEC,TSH. All the reports are normal and will upload to my profile. They advise me "Cetrizene(1-0-1)" for 3 days, "Capsule Becasule(1-0-1)" for 20 days and to continue the "Montek 5 mg(0-0-1)" course.

I am still taking Becasule,seacod & montek 5mg(0-0-1).
Its been 1 week and no improvements. I still have cold, itching in eyes, sometimes water comes from eyes.
Please help me what to do??

Brief Answer:
Start low dose oral steroid.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
Your symptoms are suggestive of allergic etiology more.
The best treatment of allergy is the identification of allergen and complete avoidance of it if possible.
Allergen can be anything but the common allergens are dust, pollens, mites, pollution etc.
So try to avoid exposure of such allergens.
In your medications, they are not prescribed according to the guidelines.
Fexofenadine is far superior drug then levocetrizine in allergy. It is also less sedative in nature.
Montelukast (montek) is anti allergic and should be given in the dose of 10 mg. You are taking 5 mg, which is pediatric dose.
Combination of montelukast and fexofenadine is available in the market. So no need to take two tablets.
So in your case you have taken
1. Inappropriate drug
2. Under dosage of anti allergic drug.
These are the reasons for delayed recovery in your case.
Do you have sneezing or running nose with cold?
Please reply me answer of above asked question, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

Brief Answer:
Start Allegra M tablet one tablet at night.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question on HCM.

Answer to your 1st question.

Yes, you can continue becosule and seacold twice daily.

Answer to your 2nd question.

Identification of allergen is subjective thing.
Just start observing by doing which thing, your symptoms are worsening. Like going out in dusty and humid atmosphere, going in polluted area, playing with pet animals, exposure of specific smell and gases etc.
If any of these are worsening your symptoms then you are allergic to that particular thing.

Answer to your 3rd question.

Start Allegra M tablet. It is having combination of montelukast and fexofenadine.
Please tell me your weight, so that I can tell you the dosage of Allegra M.

Hi,
my weight is 70 kg and height 5 feet 7 inch.

i have one more concern.
Sometimes i feel difficulty in breathing. i am having a doubt that it is due to Montek. Is that possible or its normal issue during allergy problems ??

Brief Answer:
Better to get done PFT to rule out asthma.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
You can take Allegra M (180/10) one tablet at night time.
And montek don't cause breathing difficulty.
But in allergic patients, allergic airway disease like asthma or allergic bronchitis can cause breathing difficulty.
So better to get done PFT ( pulmonary function test ) to rule out these.
Have you ever undergone PFT?
Please reply me answer of above asked question, so that I can guide you better.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

Answered by Dr. Drkaushal85 (1 hour later)
Brief Answer:
No need to consult ophthalmologist.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear, thanks for your follow up question on HCM.
No need to consult ophthalmologist. You will mostly improve with your existing eye drop and Allegra M.
Wait for 2-3 days , if not improving then consult ophthalmologist.
I advice you to get done PFT.
As possibility of small airway obstruction is high in allergic patients.
And this small airway obstruction if not treated, can lead to asthma or bronchitis in later life.
So get done PFT first.
I also want to know few more things.
1. Do you have dry coughing at night?
2. Do you have whistling sound at night?
3. Do you feel breathlessness on exertion?
Please reply me answers of above asked questions, so that I can guide you further.
I will be happy to help you further.
Wish you good health.
Thanks.

Thanks again for your suggestions.
Sure i will get the PFT test done and will upload the reports ASAP.

Regarding eye drops major concern is 1 month. Its mentioned on eye drops container, to use it within 1month after opening the container. Its more than 40 days. That why i asked, is it safe to still use it?

Below are answers of the queries:
1. Do you have dry coughing at night? No
2. Do you have whistling sound at night? No, but sometimes i snores(as per my wife).
3. Do you feel breathlessness on exertion? I don't do any physical work or exercise, so i don't have stamina. It can happen if i run for few minutes. In daily routine work it doesn't happen.
