What Causes Clear Yellow Discharge From Breast?

default
Posted on Sat, 29 Nov 2014
Question: I have had clearish nonspontaneous yellow discharge from one duct on my left nipple for several months now. I had a breast mammogram and ultrasound that both came back normal. Sometimes when I barely press on the nipple the fluid comes out. My concern is that it is persistently from the same duct. I am 41 yrs old and breast fed both of my children.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, here my answer,

1. You get serum Prolactin blood test done to confirm if the levels are normal.

2. High serum Prolactin hormone levels lead to such discharge.

3. Another possibility is inflammation of mammary glands which can be treated with antibiotics.

4. Let me know serum Prolactin levels so that I can advice further.

I had the prolactin levels checked back in Feb 2014 when I first noticed the nipple discharge and they came back normal. I was on the birth control pill to help control heavy cycles and was advised to discontinue it because of the hormonal affects. I did see a breast specialist but I am so worrisome because of the single duct. I have left the area alone as advised and still months later with minimal pressure to the tip of the nipple has the same fluid still there.

Brief Answer:
Inflammation

Detailed Answer:
Hi

If serum prolactin levels are normal, then this must be inflammation of the duct. There are 2 options of management;

1. Send the nipple discharge fluid for culture and sensitivity test and take the antibiotics according to the report. If it is a simple inflammation, it will subside with sensitivity report antibiotics.

2. If it does not subside with the antibiotic treatment, you have to go for surgical exploration and removal of the duct which is causing discharge.
