What Causes Chronic Pain In The Upper Right Quadrant Along With Nausea?
Question: Hello,
So I've been having a recurrent pain in my RUQ for about 2 years now (relieved my pressing a finger/thumb into the area). Typically brought on after eating food (but not all foods). I've had two CT scans and an MRI (MRI a year ago), as well as an endoscopy. All found nothing. Along with that, I've had persistent nausea for the past few weeks in the center of my abdomen. I began taking a fish oil, probiotic, and ginger root, which has seemed to help. But I ate a meal tonight and got incredibly nauseous and my RUQ is still hurting. I've been two three doctors; one primary care and two GI specialists. I'm terrified that it's a cancer or something malignant because it's been going on for so long and I do not have an answer, as well as almost constantly being nauseous in the center of my abdomen (near the umbilicus).

Any bloating, loose or hard stools, vomiting?
What is the type of pain? - throbbing, spasms?
What is your job profile? Any stress and anxiety related problems?

Mostly below the ribs (soft part). The RUQ is in a very localized spot (midclavicular line, below the bottom rib). I’ve had irregular bowel movements for years (some are normal some are loose). I’m a nursing student so there’s a bit of stress and anxiety. My GI doctor has run urine and blood tests (amylase, lipase, etc) and hasn’t found anything.
I should mention that I had my gallbladder removed 12 years ago, but this pain started only about 1.5 years ago.

Stress and anxiety can cause costochondritis or IBS that is irritable bowel syndrome.
As per the additional history, this can be either of 2 or both.
Please discuss this with your Gastroenterologist so that further appropriate investigations can be done to rule out any somatic problems and thus proper treatment can be started.

I have followed up with two different GI doctors and they XXXXXXX found anything. They recommended going to a pain management specialist, but this appears to be visceral due these coming on due to eating or general mid abdominal nausea. Could IBS cause a very local pain, and nausea? Is there any chance that this could be a type of liver or pancreatic cancer?

Since gallbladder was removed in 2005 this may not be related to the present pain.
